Street Child

Street Child

Street Child provides sustainable access to quality education to the world's most-marginalized children living in the world's toughest places, based on the passionate belief that education is not only a fundamental human right, but the surest pathway out of poverty.

Street Child supports children living in poverty in the world’s toughest places to go to school and learn to read and write for a brighter future.

We believe that education is a fundamental human right and the surest pathway to a life free from poverty, so we work with children who are excluded from the education system, or who live in places where the system does not exist or has collapsed:

  • Children living in rural villages, where there are no schools
  • Children living in refugee camps
  • Girls, whose education is not considered important
  • Children orphaned by Ebola or conflict, who have no one to support their schooling
  • Children whose education was disrupted by disaster or conflict
  • Children living in extreme poverty, who have no hope of reaching school

One-third of the world's out-of-school children live in disaster and conflict-affected countries. This percentage is rising annually, yet only 2% of humanitarian funds are spent on education in these emergency zones. Education in emergencies is therefore a huge part of what we do.

$1,000 in donations would fully resource a village school for more than a year, providing new desks, chairs, and books, a teacher's salary, and uniforms and pencils for the students.

$10,000 would allow Street Child to launch their award-winning Family Business for Education program in a new location, bringing enterprise and entrepreneurship to caregivers of out-of-school children who are living in poverty, unable to feed or educate their children. This would help launch more than 100 small businesses and increase household income for almost 1,000 family members.

Street Child works to ensure that the world's poorest children can access school, and provides their families with the means to keep them there.

Village Impact

Village Impact

Village Impact partners with vulnerable communities and local governments to build schools in conflict-affected communities in rural Kenya. But this is only the beginning!

They also provide the schools with essentials like desks and chalkboards, textbooks, science labs and school libraries, water and sanitation systems, kitchens, school gardens and teacher accommodations.

They also hire psychosocial counselling staff, who provide one-on-one and group counselling sessions to students at many schools. Students in Village Impact partner schools enjoy world-expanding experiences like field trips, student conferences and summer camps that help young people build the mindset and skills they need to develop their businesses and lift themselves out of poverty.

In addition, they provide access to professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators. All their projects are community-driven and, once completed, each school is community-owned and government-supported.

The Challenge in Kenya

With its significant lack of infrastructure, isolated internally displaced people communities face an acute need for school buildings. Either there are no schools at all,  or existing make-shift buildings are in such a poor state of repair that they are uninhabitable in the rainy season and dangerously close to collapse.

In January 2003, Kenya’s newly-elected Kibaki government made primary education free. While communities welcomed this announcement, the government and local infrastructures are still struggling to catch up.

There are still nearly 4,000 primary and approximately 65,000 secondary school-age children out of school in the areas in which we work.

Did you know?
  • A single year of primary school increases the eventual wages earned by 5 to 15% for boys and even more for girls.
  • For each additional year of secondary school, a girl’s income can increase by up to 20%.
  • A child whose mother is literate is 50% more likely to survive to past the age of 5.
  • Inadequate education is almost like no education at all—effective teachers are the most important influence in a student’s learning.
  • More than 80% of businesses in Kenya are small and medium-sized enterprises.
  • Over 92% of small and medium-sized businesses are micro establishments employing between 1 and 9 people.

Village Impact leverages education and business training to create opportunities for children, their families and their communities to realize positive transformation. This is one of the most effective ways to break the cycle of poverty for the long term.

Children International

Children International

Children International gives children in poverty the tools they need to create brighter futures for themselves and their communities. With the support of donors and sponsors, children and youth gain the skills and confidence they need to create promising futures free from poverty.

  • 385 million children live in extreme poverty.
  • 2.4 billion people lack access to basic sanitation services, such as toilets or latrines.
  • 821 million children, women and men around the world are undernourished.

These facts are staggering and may seem like insurmountable challenges with no resolution.

While the path out of poverty is not an easy one, when you put these issues into perspective, you can see how all of us working together can do our part to break the cycle of poverty for this generation and the next.

Small changes add up.

Putting poverty in perspective allows us to see how global problems can be solved when we all do our part. Your sponsorship or gift provides children access to educational, health care and dental programs while also funding empowerment and employment initiatives, and building community centers. Together, we can give children the chance to envision a better future and create lasting change for their communities.

A $1,000 donation would allow Children International to support one student for more than 2.5 years or 27 students for one month.

A $10,000 donation would allow Children International to support two student for 12 years of education or 275+ students for one month of education.

We connect people around the world in the fight to end poverty. Working together, we invest in the lives of children and youth, build the healthy environments they need to thrive, and empower them to create lasting change in their own lives and communities.

Action Against Hunger

Action Against Hunger is an independent and determined charity that tackles the causes and effects of hunger – no matter what the circumstances.

The mission of Action Against Hunger is to save lives by eliminating hunger through the prevention, detection and treatment of malnutrition, especially during and after emergency situations of conflict, war and natural disaster.

From crisis to sustainability, we tackle the underlying causes of malnutrition and its effects. By integrating our programs with local and national systems we further ensure that short-term interventions become long-term solutions.

Action Against Hunger works in over 47 countries, in addition to the 5 headquarters in the UK, the US, Canada, France and Spain that lead on the organizations international work.

Whether one dollar, $100, $1000, or $10,000 is raised, 93% of each dollar amount goes directly to our life-saving work around the world.

Rise Against Hunger

Rise Against Hunger

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #2 of Zero Hunger, Rise Against Hunger provides immediate nourishment for those facing hunger today and implements sustainable solutions that will lift entire communities for years to come. Rise Against Hunger targets remote, last-mile communities in countries around the world and works with local leaders and in-country partners to address food and nutrition security challenges. Rise Against Hunger works to end hunger through four pathways:

  • Through the implementation of sustainable agriculture and income-generating projects, the Empowering Communities pathway promotes improvements in agricultural production and rural livelihoods to help individuals increase their incomes and access to food. Rise Against Hunger currently has ongoing Empowering Communities initiatives in Mali, Malawi, South Sudan, Senegal and Zimbabwe.
  • While long-term food security takes root, the Nourishing Lives pathway provides nutrition and encourages education through school feeding, vocational training and health clinics.
  • From droughts to floods, in conflict zones and political crises, the Responding to Emergencies pathway deploys food and aid in communities when it is needed most.
  • Rise Against Hunger knows hunger will not end without Growing the Movement, building awareness and activation for this crucial issue. Compassion International

Compassion International

Through a holistic approach to child development, Compassion blends physical, social, economic, and spiritual care. The mission does all of their work through partnerships with thousands of local churches in 25 countries around the world.

Through child sponsorship Compassion International Mission has specific initiatives to help babies and mothers in poverty, develop future leaders, and meet critical needs.

The opportunities to assist with critical needs includes medical assistance, extra food and nutritional supplements, income-generation training, emergency home repairs and disaster relief, access to clean and safe water, education assistance, and other necessities.

Compassion carefully governs spending so that, from 1952 to date, Compassion’s one-to-one sponsorship has touched the lives of more than 4.2 million children. In 2020, supporters enabled them to serve 2.2 million children registered in the program across 8,000 front-line church partners. Of those children, 1.9 million were linked with caring sponsors.

Compassion is on a mission to release children from poverty in Jesus’ name. While Compassion has made tremendous progress in poverty alleviation since 1952, there is still much work to be done. There are still over 570 million children living in poverty – and experts believe that the COVID-19 pandemic may reverse decades of progress in curbing global poverty. Over the past several years, compassion international’s journey has been to move from activity and output monitoring to a more complete picture of the developmental outcomes necessary for children and youth to thrive, as well as understanding the causal attributes of our program’s part in that journey. – Compassion International

Make-A-Wish Colorado

Make-A-Wish Colorado

Make-A-Wish® aims to grant the wish of children diagnosed with a critical illness in the U.S. and its territories. A wish is granted every 34 minutes to help children believe that anything is possible and gives them the strength to fight harder against their illnesses.

Wishes are far more than gifts, or singular events in time. Wishes impact everyone involved—wish kids, volunteers, donors, sponsors, medical professionals and communities. For wish kids, just the act of making their wish come true can give them the courage to comply with their medical treatments. Parents might finally feel like they can be optimistic. And still others might realize all they have to offer the world through volunteer work or philanthropy.

Wishes can change the odds for children fighting their illness. A wish helps kids look past their limitations, families overcome anxiety and entire communities experience joy. Most importantly, wishes can improve a child’s quality of life. Experience the power of imagination and the strength that comes from it. At Make-A-Wish, life-changing wishes start with you.

Make-A-Wish Impact

500,000 | More than 500,000 wishes granted worldwide since 1980.

43,000 | More than 43,000 volunteers help us grant thousands of wishes each year around the world.

39 | International affiliates grant wishes for children in nearly  50 countries on 5 continents.

A wish experience can be a game-changer for a child with a critical illness. Together, we can create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. – Make-A-Wish
